The newest wing of one of Occidental College’s main academic buildings has been named Hinchliffe Hall to honor half a century of service and support from the family of John and Mary Hinchliffe. Hinchliffe retired this month from the Occidental Board of Trustees after 50 years as a trustee, a record matched only by the Rev. William Stewart Young, one of the College’s founders who also served as a board member for 50 years.
The location of Hinchliffe Hall – a 22,600 square-foot addition to Swan Hall opened in 2012 – at the center of campus “symbolizes its central role at the College, and now the central role the Hinchliffe family has played at Oxy,” said President Jonathan Veitch at a June 6 dedication ceremony. “We are all in your debt – deeply in your debt.”
“As I look around I see a lot of Oxy alumni who are proud, as we are, that this is our alma mater,” Richard Hinchliffe said, speaking on behalf of the family. “We got a good liberal arts education that made us well grounded for our careers … We’ve been fortunate to be able to give back to the College, and I’d like to encourage everyone to think of doing the same.”

What do folks say about Roger's writing and editing?
Roger,
I couldn't have said it better myself. Brilliant!
Now take a look at the Maine Experience piece, will you? You are very good, big guy.
We've got a lot more coming.

A MAN OF HIS WORDS E.T.C. came about due to an obvious growing need for the American written and spoken word to be clearer and more productive. It seems that any time we open an email, read a newsletter or an advertisement – or listen to our leaders explain themselves, we encounter a more or less serious abuse of the English language. Enter ROGER HINCHLIFFE, who claims “Never have so many people used so many words to communicate so little!” and promises to do something about it. Roger has been a professional wordsmith for many years now, providing major European corporations and select American clients with a solid, entertaining English language identity.
“Roger is indeed an excellent translator - and communicator!” writes Scandinavia’s largest broadcasting network.
“He clothed our ideas in a new linguistic suit, and it fit perfectly!” states a California university publisher.
“He’s a killer editor, consistently helpful to my clients!” exudes a Maine strategic consultant.
Too many of today’s computerized businessmen and women, corporate communicators, writers, advertisers, publishers, printers and job seekers simply don’t have the time (or perhaps the patience or skills) necessary to properly submit their literary tasks. If you need assistance when it comes to editing, copywriting, creative brainstorming, proofreading, speech writing, translating, scripting or presentation coaching, turn to A MAN OF HIS WORDS!
We make your words make you look better!
"You shouldn’t keep repeating yourself
reiterating the very same old thing
over and over and over again
several times
in a row."

HAPPINESS WILL FLY
Svenska Dagbladet Sunday July 4, 1999 Ana Martinez
….Everything is perfect this summer evening on Långholmen in Stockholm. The evening sun glitters on the water, boats sway gently alongside narrow docks and we meet smiling people out for a stroll. I feel total joy at this moment…but I don’t have to do anything special to earn it. Others do it for me.
My dear readers, allow me to introduce a figure who could have just emerged from a classic Swedish love ballad by Carl Michael Bellman. Is he a troubadour, translator, lady-charmer, mother-in-law’s dreamboat and business genius – or is he simply an American in Stockholm?
“Mister Roger Hinchliffe, at your service!” he seems to say from the small outdoor stage on a leafy veranda overlooking Södermalm and Lake Mälaren, a veranda where Bellman himself stood and regaled audiences over two hundred years ago.
“He has the perfect entertainment concept” says my friend, who manages an artist agency specializing in cultivated, upscale conference entertainment. What is it that Mr. Hinchliffe does so perfectly? Put simply, he is a gondolier who takes us across the Atlantic Canal from Sweden to the USA - in our fantasies. This is a naïve American who sees Sweden with different eyes and relates humorous anecdotes about the weird things these amazing Swedes do to one another. But he is also the dedicated translator who takes on the giants of Swedish popular culture, who makes Shakespeare out of Evert Taube, Cornelis and yes, even Povel Ramel.
“Let’s see if he really can do this!” I think to myself as others around me count syllables. I seriously doubt that Ramel’s super-Swedish idiosyncratic literary somersaults in “Underbart är kort” (literally Wonderful is Short”) can be translated...
“Of course it can’t be done!” Hinchliffe says seductively in native-sounding Swedish, only to take the swooning audience’s breath away when he sings “Happiness Will Fly” in English, accompanied by Claes Dyberg’s rich guitar.
“Didn’t I tell you that Roger has the perfect concept? Just look at the audience!” says my overjoyed friend. The continents embrace – with a truly international intensity. His show indeed has a perfect concept. Almost as perfect as this Swedish summer evening.
Stockholm's Bellman Museum on Långholmen, overlooking Lake Mälaren and the locale of Ana's article above, is pictured below. A truly stunning concert venue!)
Our Webmaster has passed away:
Charles (Chuck) Leo Leary, 68
PORTLAND
Charles L. Leary died at home on Jan. 16, 2015. Chuck was born on April 14, 1946, in Lawrence, Mass. to Dr. Gerald C. and Elaine (Carey) Leary. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1964, and from The University of Maine in 1968. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Counseling from Niagara University.
Chuck was an educator who taught for much of his career at the Maine Youth Center. He enjoyed cycling and explored New England, Canada, and Europe on his bike. He read constantly. His home was filled with books along with the stained glass pieces he created. He was a loving brother, brother-in-law, friend, and neighbor. He was a doting uncle. In a recent message to one of his nieces, he wrote, "Lately I've felt very happy about how everyone is doing…I brag whether people want to listen or not. I have to remember to talk about other things, though."
Chuck was predeceased by his parents; and by his brother, Gerald Leary. He is survived by his sister, Maureen Levine of Brunswick, his brother, Brian Leary of Falmouth; his seven nieces and nephews; and his three grandnephews.
Chuck was a great supporter of the arts and never missed a chance to see his nieces and nephews perform. He also particularly enjoyed watching his neighbors perform in shows at Portland High School and King Middle School.
The high school is in need of a new sound system, and contributions in Chuck's memory may be made to:

Roger,
In the Winter of 1988 I was sent a tape of your "Sweden's Greatest" by our former exchange student. I wanted you to know that a small boy who grew up in Green Bay Wisconsin is still driving around 28+ years later enjoying that tape and your music.
My shoes are worn out, and yes, I LOVE getting back to nature and I dream of having my neighbors laughter bounce off the stars and through my quiet nights! Lately I have been going through some hard times in our marriage and your songs give me hope and healing. Thank you!
